Homemade Fajita Seasoning

March 15th, 2010 · 10 Comments

I came back from the store and started to make dinner and forgot to buy the packet of fajita seasoning! It was too late to start something else, because I already started cooking the chicken and peppers.

So, I did a google search, got some ideas and went from there.

Jenn’s Fajita Seasoning Mix

2 TB. chili powder
1/2 TB. salt
1 TB. paprika
1 TB. sugar
2 tsp. chicken boullion (crushed cubes or powder from a jar)
1 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp. (or more!) or crushed red pepper flakes
1 tsp. ground cumin

Mix together in a bowl.

Heat 1 1/b pounds of boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into cubes into a big skillet. About half way through cooking, add 3 TB. of the fajita marinade and 1/2 cup of water.

I cook the peppers in a separate skillet, because some of my kids don’t like that combo. I used the Trader Joe’s tri-peppers that come frozen. So easy!

The result? So good! I will NEVER buy store-bought seasoning again, this was so flavorful, a little spicy, but we all loved it!

Do you make your own taco or fajita seasoning? I would love a taco spice mixture recipe!

I’ve never made either taco or fajita seasoning on my own. I cheat and buy the packet or if I’m out I just throw a big blob of salsa in the pan to cook w/ the meat. So cool that you made your own!

How creative! I use Penzey’s taco seasoning – it is much cheaper than the packets. Never thought of putting it together myself, though.

I never buy store bought taco or fajita seasoning either. #1 I don’t like the taste and #2 it is FULL of sodium.

Instead I usually just blend up our favorite salsa and toss the meat in that…everything is already in the salsa!

I have made my own taco seasoning several times. It is so quick and easy, and I always have the ingredients in my pantry anyway! Here is the one that I use:

    Homemade Taco Seasoning:
    1 Tbsp. chili powder
    2 tsp. onion powder
    1 tsp. ground cumin
    1 tsp. garlic powder
    1 tsp. paprika
    1 tsp. powdered oregano
    1 tsp. sugar
    1/2 tsp. salt

Mix all ingredients together. Makes 3 Tbsp. of seasoning, equal to a standard 1/4 oz. package of commercial mix.

Enjoy! Thanks for sharing your fajita recipe!! It was delicious! :)
