I first interviewed Kelly in January of 2011. She had lost an astonishing 65 pounds and looked great. Recently we reconnected and she told me she has lost 100 pounds!
I asked her if she wouldn’t mind sending me some newer pics and I am happy to share them with you here
This is a picture of Kelly before
And here are a few updated pictures- Kelly you look so healthy and fit!
Kelly after losing 100 pounds!
Kelly took Zumba classes to help shed the weight, now she is a Zumba instructor!
Kelly is the mom of FOUR kids and her husband is in the military AND she home schools her kids. So if she can do it with all that going on in her life – we all should have no excuses to reaching our goals!
Here is a recap of the questions I asked her back in January. To lose the additional weight, she still follows a gluten free diet and teaches Zumba classes at a local Curves studio in her home town.
The following are the questions I asked her:
1). What was your “Aha” moment when you decided you needed to do something about your weight?
I was always fit before I did back to back twin pregnancies. I used to do biathons in the military and have even come in first place! However we wanted more children, I had some medical issues, so we did IVF twice successfully with both twin pregnancies. We lost one twin on the last pregnancy but not until half way through. So, I still gained all the weight of a second twin pregnancy. With that said, I did both in my mid thirties (35) back to back. I gained over 60-70 lbs by the time I was done with the second pregnancy.
I knew I had to lose it. However, I was never a good nutritious eater. Even as a fit person. Things had to change for me there too.
2). Had you tried to lose weight in the past – were you successful when you tried?
No, I never had to before I had these back to back pregnancies. I was one of those people that fat people hated. I ate whatever I wanted and never gained a pound. Until….now I know what its like. I am humbled.
3). How do you find time for yourself to concentrate on losing weight?
It was a tricky situation for me, First, I found out I had an auto immune disease. Lupus – it came up on an ANA test and several others. I was sick all the time. My husband was in Iraq, I was homeschooling 4 kids, and I felt like I had the flu all the time. It was horrible. I could barely keep up. I needed to pull it together, go to the gym. I chose the YMCA and started exercising. I started studying causes of lupus, and went to many holisitic websites, and gluten kept popping up. I decided to cut gluten out of my diet. The weight started coming off, and even faster with ZUMBA. I danced it off! It was the funnest way to lose weight. My kids had a gym class that they enjoyed as well, so it was a 2 hour break for me and fun for them. WIN WIN!
I started taking college courses again, and used my GI Bill at American College of Healthcare Sciences to get a degree in Holistic Practioner, Master Herbalist and Nutrition.
I wanted to help others dealing with auto immune diseases and obesity. It is a serious epidemic in America, and I think diabetes is also linked to this.
4). What kept you going? Were there times where you wanted to give up?
I can’t be sick, and homeschool 4 kids with a deployed husband, I can’t make it like that. This alone was reason enough for me to get healthy.
5). How has maintenance been, is maintaining harder than losing weight?
Because I am gluten free I do not gain the weight. I exercise regularly, and eat nutritiously with butcher meats that are grass fed and gluten feed free. I eat only organic fruits and veggies. Nuts, and quinoa, and brown rice. All desserts and snacks are gluten free as well. I shop at Trader Joes for the rest.
6). Did you exercise while losing weight, if so, what do you like to do for exercise.
I love to dance, I have been dancing since I was little, prefessionally and for fun. Even coaching and teaching. So when ZUMBA came out it was right up my alley. It was not only an awesome work out, but it helped me lose weight and I couldn’t wait to go back and do it the next day.
7). What are some tips that helped you a long the way?
Dont listen to cynical people. People without the drive, or who are jealous or judgemental of your success. Stay away from them, they will bring you down. When they are ready to lose the weight they will come to you. I tried to explain to many of my over weight friends the importance of gluten free. They all want to know how you lost the weight, but don’t want to make the effort to lose it.
8). Did you have people in your life that weren’t positive towards the changes you were making?
Absolutely, they thought gluten was ridiculous, now more and more people are linking it. So the word is getting out, I am a poster child for going gluten free.
9). What was a typical eating day like when you were heavy?
I didn’t care what I ate, or what was in it. That was the problem. Bread and pasta and dessert everyday. Especially when I was pregnant with twins.
10). What is a typical eating day like now that you are eating healthier?
Only organic veggies, fruits, nuts, brown rice and quinoa and meats from the butcher. Know your butcher, know your meats.
11). What are some of the things you’ve been able to do now that you’ve lost the weight?
I have energy to keep up. I don’t need naps with my kids. I can go all day and keep going. I feel great, healthier and stronger and in better shape than I’ve ever been.
I don’t feel depressed from bad fods. My chemicals are balanced and so are my hormones.
I am glad to get rid of toxins. I do not take any prescription drugs of any kind anymore either.
12). What was different this time that made you successful in losing the weight?
My kids were my encouragement. I look at them, and know I have to do it for them to be a good mother. If I kept going the way I was – I was robbing them of precious time due to illness, and exhaustion. It’s not fair to them.

Great job Kelly! Thanks so much for sharing your story and updating me of your progress!!
I thought it would be nice to start out the New Year with some inspiring stories of people who have done an awesome job losing weight.
I’d like you to meet Kelly. She is a Mom of 4, her husband is in the military, and she home schools her children, so if a busy Mom like that can do it, so can we!

Great job Kelly! Thanks so much for sharing your story!!
I wanted this post to be all about Kelly, so come back tomorrow for my 2nd week weigh in, last week I lost over 5 pounds so the big question is…did I lose this week?? You’ll have to check back tomorrow!
One thing that’s hard when you are trying to lose weight, is wishing time would go by faster. On January 3rd, I started Day One and I’m already on 12! This time around I’m just taking it day to day. Since January 3rd, I’ve entered my calories and exercise on www.myfitnesspal.com religiously every day and its been a real eye opener. For example, I never really would count the calories (or think about them) making my coffee in the morning. I use some sugar and non dairy creamer and once I started figuring out I was adding almost 100 calories to my coffee and maybe have several cups, those calories add up. I think just knowing what I am doing is helping a lot.
This week, I used a gift card I got for Christmas at a local restaurant by my office to get lunch. I will tell you, my favorite thing on the menu is their chicken tenders with fries. They are double battered, crunchy and yummy. But, I knew there had to be a healthier choice for me. So what did I get?
YUM!
I got a grilled chicken burrito on a low carb wrap. How did I save some calories?
I said no cheese, no mayo and subbed fruit for fries.
And, guess what? I only ate half and saved the other half for my lunch the next day. As soon as I got back to work, I wrapped up the other half and stuck it in the fridge so I wouldn’t be tempted to eat the whole thing. I was STUFFED after eating just half, and eating the fruit instead of the fries was just fine! I didn’t miss it at all!
Also, Roz inspired me to make this for breakfast (she calls it her Roz McMuffin).
I had one English Muffin, 1 egg, 2 egg whites, 1 oz. deli salami and 1/2 ounce of muenster cheese for @ 300 calories! Thanks for the idea Roz, I love this kind of breakfast. I had it with 2 small apples and I was set until lunch!!
Have a great weekend.
I am bringing back “Weight Loss Superstars” series and will be posting a story of a woman who lost 65 pounds last year! So, check back on Monday for that story!!
Since Thanksgiving is just around the corner, I read a great article in New York Magazine showcasing New York City’s top chefs. They talk about what their favorite childhood Thanksgiving dish was. Not only do you find out what their favorite dishes are, but it also includes the recipes as well. Mario Batali’s apple pie, Tom Colicchio’s sausage stuffing with golden raisins and sage as well as Alfred Portale’s roasted cauliflower salad with fresh goat cheese! (My sister loves everything goat cheese, so I know she’d love that recipe!) Click HERE for the article and gorgeous food photos.
Also, I wanted to give a shout out to my friend Keith Ahrens. Please take a moment to check out his new website and see some great new features. For those of you who don’t know, Keith has lost an astounding 200 pounds and is on a mission to spread the word on how to prevent heart disease. I profiled his success story, and he continually impresses me with his determination to keep the weight off.
And, I would like to introduce you to another website: www.angelabarton.com. Who is Angela Barton? Not a food blogger, or a chef, but a woman who in January of 2009 set out to not buy anything new for one year! She loved it so much she continues the practice. It’s about leaving less of a carbon imprint, learning to live with less and loving it, being resourceful and all the things she’s learned in the process. If you want to save more money, or just read about how she lives her life it’s a great read!! I left a comment and she put that comment in her blog post today, so I thought that was cool!
And, I just started reading it, but I like it so far. You guys know what a fan I am of the Biggest Loser. There are several winners out there who have written books. I am reading Ali Vincents book:
Have you read her book yet? I’ll let you know what I think of it when I am done.
In fact, now I am going to watch Biggest Loser right now, so come back tomorrow and I will share my awesome crock pot chicken tacos. I love coming home from work and having dinner almost done!!
Two women who I interviewed as Weight Loss Superstars, Jen from Prior Fat girl, and Shelley from A forty something’s weight loss journey ran 10 miles this past weekend! As a person who has finished 2 marathons, I couldn’t help but be moved by these accomplishments. Running farther than you ever thought possible is an amazing feeling!
Read about Jen’s 10 mile story here. Jen’s story is especially moving because right before she lost 100 pounds her mother was killed by a car. She could have given up and gained all the weight back, but she’s continued to show that no matter what happens in your life, you can still keep going!! You are such an inspiration Jen!
And, Shelley, my dear blogging friend who ran 10 miles for the first time this past weekend. Before losing 100 pounds, she was a certified couch potato, but now she’s joined a running club, works out with a trainer and has maintained her weight loss. She makes me laugh because she calls her GARMIN watch Ricky Bobby. Please read her account of the race, it’s so great!
In case you never read Jen’s weight loss success story, you can read about it here

So yesterday when I picked my daughter up after work, she couldn’t wait to tell me her exciting news! Her 3rd grade class got their balance ball chairs yesterday!!
Basically, they are balance balls with feet that the kids sit on instead of chairs. According to the company who provided them, these are the benefits they have found for students:
• Assists in improving posture
• Enhances attention and concentration
• Improves learning through movement
• Incorporates health and wellness into the school day
• Promotes “active sitting”- with little to no disturbance
• Improves blood flow to all parts of the body, especially the brain
• Strengthens core (postural) & back muscle groups
• Improves balance and coordination
• Adjusts for customized fit to the individual
So, that’s a great step I think for our school kids! Maybe I should get one for work!!
And lastly, Dave from Year on the Grill is going to be hosting this weeks BSI contest, so he will be posting about the soon, thanks for doing that Dave!
